Dr. Adrian Rogers was a highly influential leader in the Southern Baptist Convention who led with clarity and a deep love for Christ. His strong stand for biblical inerrancy and doctrinal fidelity helped define who we are as Southern Baptists today.
There are countless godly men we can admire and imitate in our ministries. Such men offer us wisdom and a model to follow. There is great importance in listening to older godly men and taking their advice to heart.
Adrian Rogers is one of those men for me. His preaching impacted me at a young age and continues to do so.
I want you also to learn from Adrian Rogers, who was a treasure chest of wisdom for young expositors. Here are three lessons that we can draw from his ministry:
Love the Word of God
Adrian Rogers had an undeniable affection for the Word of God. Not only did he love the Word, but he was also deeply convinced of the inerrancy of Scripture. In an interview with doctoral students, Rogers said, “The Word of God is not a possible source of reference material for preaching, but rather, the primary source for preaching the gospel.” [1] Rogers taught that the inspired Word of God is the foundation for preaching.
Not only is the Bible inerrant and inspired, but it is also beautiful. For young expositors, Adrian Rogers’s love for the Word of God pushes us to be continually transformed and enraptured by it. Nothing can replace your daily quiet time with the Lord spent in His Word.
Preach the Word of God
Adrian Rogers teaches us the importance of consistent expository preaching. The commitment to expository preaching is something that young expositors should not abandon.
Adrian Rogers’s ministry is built on expository preaching and applying the Word of God. He was a convictional text-driven preacher who began with a text, exegeted it, outlined it, and applied it. Each sermon was easy to follow and remember. He employed rich illustrations, rhetorical clarity, and practical applications. His sermons consistently exalted Christ. Adrian Rogers teaches us the importance of consistent expository preaching. The commitment to expository preaching is something that young expositors should not abandon. Do the work of exegesis and application! Preach the Word of God with boldness and clarity.
Live out the Word of God
Not only did Adrian Rogers model what it means to love and preach the Word of God, but he also showed us in practice what it looks like to live under the Word of God. As preachers, we too need to have our own hearts transformed by the Word of God. Adrian Rogers regularly stressed the importance of personal holiness in the life of the Christian. Live a holy life before God. Live out the truths that you proclaim every week. Allow the truths of the Word to penetrate your heart and overflow into your walk with Christ. Adrian Rogers loved his wife, children, church, and the nations well because he understood Christ’s love for sinners like us. Allow your life to be transformed by the Word of God and live in such a way that you are magnifying the Lord Jesus Christ.
Adrian Rogers was and continues to be a model for preachers. As we learn from men of the faith, may we see the wisdom that they offer to us in our own ministry. His impact on our denomination is incredible. We can be thankful for the Lord’s work through men like Dr. Adrian Rogers.
